What is Share of Shelf?

Share of shelf is the proportion of visible shelf space in a category occupied by a given brand or SKU, usually expressed as a percentage of facings or linear space.

Share of shelf is the proportion of visible shelf space in a category that a given brand or SKU occupies — usually expressed as a percentage of facings, or of linear shelf width. It is the in-store equivalent of market share, measured in centimetres rather than currency.

Why share of shelf matters

Shelf space and sales are closely linked, and the causality runs both ways: products that sell well earn more space, and products with more space sell more. That feedback loop is why space is contested, and why brands treat it as a commercial objective rather than a merchandising detail.

It is also the most reliable early warning available in-store. A competitor gaining facings usually precedes a change in sales — and because it is visible on the shelf before it appears in the numbers, it is actionable while there is still something to do about it.

How share of shelf is measured

Two definitions are in common use, and they do not produce the same number:

  • Share of facings — count the front-facing units of the brand, divide by the total facings in the category. Simple to count and insensitive to pack size.
  • Linear share — measure the shelf width the brand occupies, divide by the category's total width. More accurate commercially, because a wide pack genuinely takes more space than a narrow one.

Whichever is chosen, the category boundary must be fixed first. Share of shelf is a ratio, and moving the denominator — does the adjacent premium sub-segment count? — changes the answer without anything on the shelf changing at all. A comparable measure requires the same category definition in every store and every cycle.

An example

A shelf holds 120 facings in the biscuits category. Brand A has 30, giving 25% share of facings. But Brand A's packs are narrow: measured linearly, its 30 facings occupy 2.1 metres of a 10-metre bay, a 21% linear share. Both numbers are correct, and reporting one while a retailer negotiates on the other is a reliable way to lose an argument.

Common variations

  • Share of category vs. share of bay. Whether the denominator is the product category or the physical fixture.
  • Hot-spot share. Share restricted to eye level or another high-value zone, since not all shelf space is worth the same.
  • Share of visibility. Broadened to include secondary displays, end caps and point-of-sale material.

Limitations worth stating

Counted by hand, share of shelf is slow and subjective — two auditors in the same aisle regularly disagree about where a category ends and how to count a stacked facing. It is also a snapshot: measured on a Tuesday morning, it may not describe the same shelf on Saturday afternoon after a weekend of depletion. And share of shelf says nothing about whether the stock behind the facing exists, which is why it is measured alongside availability rather than instead of it.
